WONDERING MAN: Are men’s shirts with button-down collars going out of style? –Mark O.

ANSWER: Trends come and go, but the button-down collar look has been a staple of a man’s wardrobe since the late 1800s and I don’t see it changing anytime soon. Some argue that this is a casual shirt since it was conceived by polo players to keep their collars from flapping around while horsing around.

Brooks Brokers, which some think is the epitome of classic men’s style, shows button-down collar shirts in their “dress shirt” section and they show it with a tie. GQ the site for men’s fashion, says you can wear a tie with a button down collar shirt, but it’s too casual for a suit. And Real Men Real Style talks about button down collar shirts with custom made suits! White Collar, a TV series on USA Network shows a button down collar shirt with a suit. So, if you want to defend this style you have lots of options.

My two cents is that it is a less formal look than the standard collar. However, in today’s business casual world, they are worn regularly.

May you always look great!
