WONDERING WOMAN: I don’t see many women wearing dresses anymore. Are they pretty much out? –Jane S.

ANSWER: Dresses started going by the wayside when “business casual” started. Women were tired of wearing slips and pantyhose and fully embraced the more casual pant look. Another reason dresses aren’t shown as much is because they are not as versatile as a skirt and blouse set, which can be mixed in a variety of ways. But don’t give up on dresses completely! Day dresses are being shown in many stores. Dresses are so easy on those days when you really don’t want to think about which blouse to wear with which pair of pants.

Some great day dresses:

  1. Charter Club V-Neck Floral, available at Macy’s is the ever-flattering wrap style. Be careful that your wrap closes appropriately so that no cleavage shows when you are standing, sitting, or making a presentation. If you’re not sure it will meet all those requirements, practice in the dressing room. Be on the safe side and wear a cami!
  2. Nordstroms offers this beautiful dress from Tahari. The button detail is quite flattering and this set-in waist with slightly puffed skirting style works well on women who have a bit of a hip or saddle bag area.
  3. This convertible shirt-dress from Merona, available at Target should fit in anyone’s budget. You can wear the sleeves rolled up to 3/4 length or down at your wrist. This is a simple dress and can be great for adding a pop of color with a bold necklace or a colorful scarf at the neck. If you are so inclined, you can swap out the matching belt for one that emphasizes your waist.

May you always look great!
