WONDERING WOMAN: I like bold jewelry, but aren’t there times when it’s too much?

ANSWER: Bold jewelry makes a statement. The question is whether you want to speak or scream. Both of these necklaces are from Chico’s. The top necklace is big and bold. Then I saw the second option and immediately thought — enough is enough! This is just too much. There must be at least seven different rows of necklace. Although the catalog didn’t say so, there has to be more than one necklace going on here. I could only find one of them on the site.

Things to consider when choosing jewelry:

  • Bold jewelry should be worn with a more neutral palette so the jewelry stands out. Trying to put bold jewelry against a bold pattern has too many things calling for attention. It’s just too much.
  • The larger person you are, the bigger your jewelry can be. One of the reasons the second necklace doesn’t work as well is because it totally overpowers the woman. If this woman was 6 feet tall and wore a size 16W, this look might have been more appropriate. This doesn’t mean a petite person can’t wear bold jewelry. They can, and should. They just need to make sure it doesn’t overpower their entire presence.
  • Sometimes a bold piece of jewelry can help out when the neckline of your top is a bit too low. If you look closely at the first image, her cleavage is just starting to show. Filling in the space with a bold piece of jewelry causes the eye to look at the jewelry, taking the attention away from the cleavage. Note that it is just a “bit too low.” If you have an extremely low top, showing a lot of cleavage, nothing is going to be able to hide that.

May you always look great!
