WONDER WOMAN QUESTION: Spring is coming and I want to shed these winter clothes for a pair of shorts as soon as possible. But my legs look so white that I’m afraid I’ll blind everyone who sees me. How do I handle this?

ANSWER: First realize that everyone in the Midwest is in the same boat. Unless you’ve has been hitting the tanning booth on a regular basis throughout the winter, your legs are going to look stark white when you first put on those shorter styles—cropped pants, shorter skirts or shorts. Self-tanners to the rescue. Today’s self-tanning lotions are formulated to gradually change your skin tone. The trick is to be patient. If you have fair skin, don’t reach for the darkest self-tanning lotion. Start out lighter and work your way darker. It is also important to apply the lotion according to the directions, using a consistent amount over the entire area. As product can “pool” around ankles and elbows, be extra careful in these areas so that you don’t end up with “rust” marks. These are telltale signs that you are using a self-tanning lotion. Some recommended products: Mary Kay Subtle Tanning Lotion, Jergens Natural Glow, Nivea Sun-Kissed Legs.
