If you’re a woman I’ll let you in on a little secret: what’s the most important wardrobe item—foundation, foundation, foundation. Have you lost a bit of the “perk?” Some start to lose it in their 30s and if you’re over 40 it’s almost guaranteed. Even those who are vigilant about exercise and dieting find “old sag” creeps in as we age.

Here’s how to tell if you’re a victim of the sag. Turn sideways and look in the mirror. Are the tips of your breasts half way between your shoulder and your elbow? If not, your bra doesn’t fit properly and you are probably suffering from one or all of the following:

  1. People think you are older than your actual age.
  2. You hate shopping for clothes.
  3. You choose clothes for comfort over attractiveness.
  4. You spend a lot of time rearranging—fixing drooping straps, adjusting the underwire.

WARNING:  You are dangerously close to becoming frumpy!

Certified Bra Fitter Karla Anton of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, says “It’s amazing how much money women will spend on clothes only to forget that what goes under them can make all the difference. Your foundations can be the most important thing in your wardrobe.  They can make or break an outfit; they affect your comfort as well as your self-image.  You owe it to yourself to get a proper fitting in the right style of bra for your body.”

Finding a properly fitted bra is no easy task. It takes a professional to make sure it fits properly. You will be measured while you are wearing your current bra and then offered some styles to try on. They will want to see how the bra fits. Push aside your modesty and let them do their work. A professional will be able to determine if the cup to too large or small, if the band it too loose or tight, and if the straps have enough space to adjust as the bra breaks in.
