Denim will always be a hot ticket item, but this spring it is everywhere! Everyone knows how to throw on a comfortable pair of denim jeans and head out the door. So how come denim is so hot right now? As with all high fashion items, it’s the way you put things together that makes them either fabulous or frumpy. Make sure yours is on the fabulous side, a la Katie Holmes!

Even if jeans are acceptable at your place of employment most companies won’t be happy to see you in the distressed bleached look they are showing on the runway. If jeans are frowned upon, many companies are more open to a jean skirt. Look for with a dark-wash denim skirt like this one from Jag Jeans, as it lends an air of authority (and dark is more slimming). Consider the pencil-skirt style if you have slim hips and an a-line style if your hips are more generous. If you want your legs to look thinner, focus on the a-line style as the wider skirt will make your legs look thinner in comparison. Pairing your jean skirt with a crisp shirt and a pair of neutral sandals/pumps will keep you looking fresh and modern.

If bleached and/or distressed jeans are your passion, then your casual life might be the place to satisfy your inner diva. This style from Madewell is great if you want to call attention to your lower body as the eyes are drawn to lighter colors or distressed areas. Can’t afford the big-ticket price of designer distressed jeans, try it yourself, with instructions here.

A jean jacket from Newport News is also a great way to add denim to your wardrobe. You can mix this type of jean jacket with just about anything—black dress, patterned skirt or dress, white jeans, etc. Although seen in magazine and on the runway, pairing a bleached jean jacket and a bleached jean can be tricky. If you want to try this look, make sure the two items are different enough that it won’t look like a denim suit!
